In this field, Brest ranks among the top 10 cities worldwide and is in first place in Europe. Between its major schools, the University of Western Brittany and research institutes such as the European University Institute of the Sea (IUEM), Ifremer and the Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV), the Brest region is home to more than 50% of French public research. Associated with the presence of clusters, industrial groups and companies working in strategic areas such as Defense and marine renewable energies, Brest offers a solid and complete spectrum, in these fields.

The territory is at the digital forefront. Certified "Capitale French Tech", there are today 1,630 establishments and 19,000 jobs related to this field. Telecommunications, health, finance, virtual and augmented reality, intelligent transport systems, cybersecurity ... so many applicable fields that are blooming.
Health
The CHRU, the leading health operator in Brittany, nationally ranks 8th for its research. Beyond the quality and the importance of providing personal care, several specialties such as molecular genetics and image-guided surgery are areas where Brest’s excellence is recognized. Healthcare in the territory represents 6,500 professionals and 1,300 students.
Finance
The banking-insurance sector in the Pays de Brest was developed with a mutualism spirit, that guided and stimulated the pioneers of cooperatives of the early twentieth century. Today, embodied by powerful groups with international presence, such as Crédit Mutuel Arkéa or Crédit Agricole du Finistère, that employ 22,000 people, almost a quarter of them in the metropolitan area and boost every aspect of the economy by investing and innovating.
Agri-food
Big names in the food industry were created at the tip of Brittany. You probably know Savéol, Triskalia or Sill. Originated from traditional agriculture, the sector has been structured and diversified. There are as many as, 1,330 farms, 7,125 employees and 400 small and medium-sized businesses in Brest.
